How listings are sourced

PawFare publishes a fact only when a public page or a public directory file stated it. Empty fields mean the source did not say. They are not guesses.

Two kinds of records

Organization website. On October 24, 2026 we opened the clinic, hospital, or program page and copied the address, phone, hours, prices, and eligibility rules that were actually printed. Teaching hospitals are included because people search for them. Their pages did not describe them as discount clinics, so the listing does not pretend they are.

Directory import. United Spay Alliance publishes downloadable state PDFs. We parsed Florida (printed date October 24, 2021), New York (printed date August 27, 2021), and Pennsylvania (no publication date on the file). Those files were downloaded again on October 24, 2026. The same day we copied the public program locator map (the store_search response behind the map at unitedspayalliance.org/state-local/program-locator-map/). The map covers all 50 states and does not include prices or hours, so those fields stay empty. Service labels follow the map: low-cost spay/neuter, voucher programs, and TNR are separate, and a Feline Fix by Five participating vet is a private practice, not a low-cost clinic. A row with no service type is still listed, with that gap labeled. Map rows that match a hand-checked clinic were dropped. Map rows that match an older PDF listing do not replace that PDF's prices or hours. None of the directory rows were reconfirmed clinic by clinic.

Coordinates

If a hospital printed GPS coordinates, those are the ones we used. Otherwise street addresses were sent to the U.S. Census Bureau geocoder. A match outside the state's rough bounding box was discarded. Unmatched addresses have no pin. We do not drop a clinic on the city center to fill the gap.

What we did not collect

To add a state, put a new PDF URL in scripts/import_usa_directory.py or add a checked record in scripts/manual_listings.py, then run npm run data.
